Step into a thousand years of grassland.
Understand a landscape through the words of the people who live with it. We are developing a day in Aso that connects grassland, food and everyday life. This is a concept for a day experience; locations and operating conditions are still being arranged.

From looking to understanding.
Aso may first stay with you as a wide sky, mountains and open grassland. We want to make room for the question that follows: why does this landscape exist here?
Listen to a local guide, notice the plants underfoot and learn how the land is used. Together, we hope to trace connections between landscape and daily life that a photograph alone cannot reveal. No specialist knowledge is needed; time for your questions matters.
Three things to make time for.
Walk at your own pace. Rather than rushing between stops, spend time in one place. We will confirm suitable distances, paths and participation requirements.
Listen to the guide. Hear how they relate to the land and how it changes with the seasons. Look again at the view through the things they notice.
Connect landscape and food. Discover what grows locally and how people eat it. A meal can also be a way of understanding a place.
How the day might unfold.
Meet and get to know the land: travel from Kumamoto city to Aso, meet your guide and check the weather, walking area and local rules.
Walk and listen: explore places where permission has been obtained, with stories about grassland and everyday life, breaks and time for photographs.
Taste and reflect: enjoy local food and its connection to the landscape you have seen. We are considering a comfortable pace that includes travel time.
This is not a confirmed itinerary. Meeting points, times, food and transport will be set out in the operating conditions provided by the travel agency.
Let the season and weather shape the day.
Grass colour, light and wind change the feel of a place. We are considering experiences that can adapt to the day, such as a shorter walk or a conversation indoors.
Pastureland has managers. We will distinguish publicly accessible areas from places requiring prior permission and stay within permitted areas. Entry to special sites or observation of, or participation in, particular work is not currently guaranteed.
What we will explain before you join.
Walking conditions: distance, duration, footing, changes in elevation and places to rest, so that you can judge what suits you.
Clothing and equipment: suitable shoes, rainwear, warm layers and drinks, depending on the season and location. Required equipment will be announced with the program.
Languages and group size: we will confirm available languages, interpretation, participant numbers and guiding arrangements before publishing them.
Price and changes: the travel agency will explain included services, extra costs, wet-weather changes and cancellation conditions.
